Safecracker
Reviewed by Angie Kibiloski

Safecracker (Retail $19.99), from The Adventure Company, is a great example of a simple game idea with maximum pleasure output. This is definitely a game for pure puzzling aficionados, who love nothing more than solving a good challenge or cracking a complex code. You'll spend hours of fun delighting in your own genius as you decipher and break into each progressively challenging safe.

Safecracker has a nice and tidy plot. You are a professional safecracker who has been hired by the family of the dearly departed safe collector and builder, Duncan W. Adams. His potential heirs would like to know where his will is hidden, and who will inherit his billions. There are no monsters to kill you, no irksome characters to chat with, and no complex mystery to solve, just pure safecracking bliss. Each of the 35 safes, scattered around a beautifully created mansion, is different and unique, and requires a variety of deciphering skills. Some of them are as easy as finding the correct key to open a lock. Of course, this key is hidden inside another safe that you have to break into first. Others are quite difficult and you can stare at them for 10 minutes straight (trust me) and still not have the foggiest clue where to begin.

As you make your way through the mansion and discover new rooms and safes, these spaces will be added to the dynamic and evolving map in your inventory. Each puzzle is signified by an 'X' on the map, and when you have opened that safe, the 'X' will change color from red to green, so it is easy to navigate through the game. Except for the safes requiring a key given after solving another puzzle, you can complete the challenges in any order you wish, giving you a nice amount of freedom in your experience. Without any danger of dying, you needn't save often, but you'll want to save right before the very last safe challenge. There is a nifty surprise, and you'll want to replay the end several times to enjoy all of the options of the finale.

If you love a good challenge and live for puzzles and code cracking, then Safecracker is the game for you. Sometimes the simplest things in life are the best, and this game is absolutely one of those things. Without crazy people to have to talk to, or a confusing plot, Safecracker breaks down the gaming experience to a mind bending series of intricate puzzles, designed to delight, challenge, and reward that avid decoder. Pick up your copy today and let the fun begin.
