Micro Machines V4
Reviewed by Angie Kibiloski

They may be small, but they sure are powerful. Micro Machines, those pint sized cars and trucks, have been a favorite toy for years. Now with the new video game from Codemasters and Hasbro, you can get behind the wheel of these miniature motors and race the day away. Micro Machines V4 (Retail $19.95) is an awesome and unique driving experience.

Like in any car racing game, you compete against other drivers to race around the track. However, with Micro Machines, your track is not a boring loop around a humdrum speedway, but an obstacle course around such cool environments as a downtown rooftop, a kitchen counter, and a billiard's table. The obstacles that you must maneuver around are pool balls, candy boxes, forks, drain pipes, and other everyday debris, and because you are so small, these things are thrillingly gigantic.

You can play single player against computer opponents, multi player with your friends, or online with people around the world. Use the keyboard controls or a handheld game pad. Choose your track or build your own. Race to see if you can beat 3 other cars for the win, or battle it out one on one with another player. There are so many options in this game, and so many ways to play. As you win races, you unlock different cars that you can choose to drive. Up the stakes in the multi player tournaments by betting your cars as the prize. You can even trade with your friends or online to build your mini car collection. There are 750 different Micro Machines to unlock and collect.

As an added challenge during the races, there are Power-Ups to collect on the race track. There are 25 different Power-Up bonuses and weapons to use. There are Power-Ups to regain your health after being damaged, or to inflict double damage on an opposing vehicle. Get damaged too much and you are out of the race. There are weapon Power-Ups like dice bombs that scatter along the track and explode on impact, the shocker that electrocutes a nearby car, or the missile, which can take out cars in front of you. These make Micro Machine V4 racing a truly extreme sport.

Racing games are fun to begin with. There is just something cool about racing around a track, through the city, or off road at break neck speeds, and leaving all of the other cars in your dust. But Micro Machines V4 takes that adrenaline high to the next level. By shrinking down to the size of a matchbox, maneuvering these mini vehicles is an experience like none other. Where else can you dodge sugar cubes that are as big as your car, or take out your road rage with exploding projectiles? The biggest fun you'll have this year is on four teeny tiny wheels!
