Cars: Radiator Springs Adventures and Cars

Reviewed by Angie Kibiloski

The software company THQ has just published two new and exciting video games based on Disney and Pixar's animated film, Cars. The first is Cars: Radiator Springs Adventures (Retail $19.95), which tests a variety of your thinking skills, in 10 challenging activities. The second, simply called Cars (Retail $19.95), is pure driving fun. Both feature the voice talents from the original movie, and interactions with all the major characters. Each provides hours of four wheeling excitement for all ages.

Cars: Radiator Springs Adventures takes you, as Lightning McQueen, all around Radiator Springs to help your friends with their daily tasks. Each activity needs a different set of skills to complete. Test your memory, spatial logic, timing, coordination, and driving prowess. There are 6 levels in each game, and each level is progressively harder. Be patient and alert. Some of the challenges are more difficult than they look.

In Fill 'Er Up, help Flo give 6 cars a full service fill-up in the correct order. Each car's order of services is progressively longer and harder. At Radiator Springs Curios shop, help Lizzie remember where on her wall to hang each of her bumper stickers. Drive-In and Out, asks you to strategically move a bunch of parked cars in order to get unblocked and get out of the drive-in theater. Hip-Hop It Up requires you to replicate the dance moves of Ramone, by matching a series of directional arrows. In Luigi's Fantastico Fun, catch all of the falling tires and stack them up before they can hit the floor. MUCH harder than it sounds. Doc's Tune Up is kind of like the board game Operation. Guide the bolts and other debris out of the exhaust systems of 6 cars, without hitting the sides of the ever-narrowing pipes. Tractor Roundup pits you and Mater against a field of unruly tractors. Honk next to them without getting hit, and they tip over and disappear. Sarge's Boot Camp, Tow The Line, and Speed Trap are all continuous driving challenges, around a track, an impound lot, and a highway, while avoiding barrels, fences, and oil spots. Gear up for some fancy steering.

After completing each activity, you will unlock a racing secret that you can use in the Legends Race against each character. You can still compete even if you haven't beaten each corresponding activity, but it is far easier if you know the secret to win against each opponent. Another incentive to complete each activity is the ability to customize your car. As you beat each game, and as you beat your own times and scores for each game, you will unlock paintjobs for your car that you can switch out during game play, backdrops and accessories that you can take printable photos with, and cool movie clips.

In the other game, Cars, you explore the town of Radiator Springs while gearing up for the ultimate Piston Cup Race. Spread around town are three types of activities to play, Road Races, Piston Cup Races, and Mini-Games. In the two racing type of challenges, you go up against various characters to see if you have what it takes to leave the others in your dust. Some Min-Games include tractor tipping, hunting around the town and surrounding roads and valley for scattered souvenirs, and chasing down speeding law breakers. As you drive around the town, pick up lightening bolt bonus points, or collect bonus points during your races for performing extra special maneuvers. Spend these points in the Bonus area to unlock new characters to play, paint jobs, movie clips, and concept art galleries.

Both Cars and Cars: Radiator Springs Adventures are high-speed challenging games, suited for both kids and adults. They put you into the world of Cars, and surround you with the characters and scenes from the movie. With a non-linear game play style, you can control the order of your adventure, and replay the activities as many times as you want. With the bonus features of movie clips, changeable paint jobs, and more, you have an incentive to keep playing for hours. Even if you have never seen the movie, the adorable bright-eyed characters will capture your attention and keep you entertained. These are two must have games for anyone's holiday gift list.
