MP100 Portable DVD Player

Reviewed by Angie Kibiloski

Imagine, if you will, that you are at Dallas/Fort Worth airport, just sitting down for your three hour layover. You've finished your novel AND a crossword on the first flight of your journey, and you don't see anyone who looks normal enough to engage in a game of cards. In a word, you're bored. Wouldn't it be great if you could be at home, sitting in front of your big screen TV, watching Harry Potter? Ah well, too bad you can't.....WAIT, but you CAN. How could you have forgotten that you packed your MP100 Portable DVD Player (Retail around $280) in your carry-on? Silly you. Well, in no time flat, you whip out your convenient MP100, brought to you by the lovely people at Mustek, and your laptop theater is in business. Presto, you are no longer bored.

Soon, the allure of the 10 inch screen, with exceptional visual quality, and the crisp sound from the built in speakers draws a crowd, and you are the most popular person in the terminal. Everyone marvels at the picture and sound quality, as well as the sleek design of the player. In a moment of inspiration, you wow everyone by swiveling the screen 180˚, closing the lid, and creating a flat screen TV! Amazing! Lifted up by all the attention, you further demonstrate your portable player's assets by grabbing the accompanying little remote control, walking 10 feet across the room, and zapping the movie into Fast Forward, Rewind, and Pause, with little flourishes of your remote "wand." Suddenly, the angry looking attendant at the desk gives you a glare that could turn you to dust, and you sheepishly relinquish the floor to the regularly scheduled (boring) activity of the terminal. Subdued, but not defeated, you plug in your headphones using the convenient jack on the MP100 and continue to enjoy your adventures in Hogwart's. "Ah, thank you Mustek," you think, "What would I have done without your MP100?" You begin to think how, once you are home, you should write a review on this product, and tell the world how great it is to have a portable DVD player along with you on vacations. And that is just what you...ehm...I did.

Mustek's MP100 is a good option when in the market for portable DVD players. The 10 inch widescreen is fantastic, and really does have great sharp picture quality. The sound is crisp and clear, to the point that you can almost forget that you are listening to built in laptop style speakers. It is not very heavy, weighing in at 5 lbs. You not only have the option of plugging headphones into the unit, you can plug it into a TV, perhaps at a hotel, using the S-Video and coaxial cables, and output your DVD onto an even larger screen. The small remote is easy to use and conveniently travel sized, and there are also control buttons directly on the unit if you are close enough to not need the remote. You may also plug the unit into the wall with the power cord, or run off the battery, which fully charged, has a life of about 4 hours. Comparable in price, specifications, and quality, Mustek's MP100 can definitely give the competition a run for their money.
