Massive Assault
Matrix Games' Massive Assault (Retail $39.99) by Wargaming.Net, is a strategic war game set in a dynamic environment, where the tide can turn at any time, even several times in the course of an individual battle. As the reviewing editor, and also a retired Air Force officer, I thoroughly enjoyed the realism of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) engine while playing the single user game. In addition to earning a Computer Times Editor's Choice award, I personally feel that this game should earn a place in every military training school that teaches strategic command and control or any other type of strategic planning. Massive Assault is easy to learn with its no-nonsense tutorial and will have even the newest player of computerized strategy games completely involved in making command decisions in just a few minutes.
The game begins with a well-done intro video that sets the stage for your strategic thinking. If you choose to listen to the background music, like any good movie soundtrack, it will add to the intensity of the situation at hand.
In Massive Assault, you take the command of "Free Nations Union" forces to defeat the secret alliance of "Phantom League" on one of 6 distant planets. The rebels decided to seize the power on Earth by first conquering the space colonies, which provide vital energy resources to F.N.U. The war for global domination will unroll on continents, at sea and in the air. You must lead your divisions, fleets and air squadrons against those who dared threaten our freedom and democracy.
Massive Assault's secret alliance concept provides endless replayability that always places you in unique strategic situations. In each game the distribution of secret allies is totally different, so you will never have two alike games. To win, you will need to employ the eternal principles of warfare, such as:

While many war strategy games seem to be getting more complex in the amount of training it takes to be even a beginning user, Massive Assault has taken the refreshing opposite approach. You do not have to study user manuals and spend days learning how to operate the game. The user interface is so intuitive you can get started without the manual. Just a few minutes on the interactive practice tutorial and you are on your way. By making the computer interface simple, Massive Assault lets you focus on the strategic thinking and planning you need to defeat the enemy forces. An excellent design, an excellent concept, an excellent game. Our hats off to the designers who have developed a superb perspective on wargaming and kept the computer interface simple enough for everyone including beginning gamers, military trainees, non-techical commanders and armchair warriors. Well done! Definitely deserving the Computer Times Editor's Choice award.
